Inspiring Young Artists

Jim Foster, LA’71, has always been passionate about the fine arts.

While he was a student at Drake University, his economics professor Dale Berry connected him to the Des Moines Playhouse, where he assisted behind the scenes and even took on a few minor roles.

It was a memorable experience, and one of the reasons Jim decided to create the Jim Foster Endowed Theatre Fund to support the production of performances at Drake. The fund will be created through the gift of a life insurance policy.

“I feel it is important to reach back and assist people who are coming up behind us,” says Jim.

Jim was a nontraditional student and attended classes during nights and weekends while working full-time. He didn’t have time to explore all the things he wanted to during college, and he hopes that his support will empower students to pursue their interests.

“Sometimes the fine arts get overlooked and that shouldn’t be the case,” says Jim. “If my donations can keep them in the limelight, and maybe discover the next Denzel Washington or Viola Davis, that would be very satisfying. The fine arts are wonderful programs to have at Drake University. I want to help them to survive, grow stronger, and be great.”
