Building a Family Legacy At Beloved Drake University

Paul Family

As the child of a faculty member, Jean Paul grew up on the Drake campus.

“I remember going to Relays, watching Drake in the Final Four,” she says. “Drake was always an important part of our lives.”

When her father, Eugene J. Paul, passed away in 1989, she and her mother, Barbara, established the E.J. Paul Scholarship, later renamed the E.J. Paul Family Scholarship. The scholarship honored Eugene’s long and respected career as an associate professor in the College of Business and Public Administration at Drake University and his many contributions to the community and business world. The scholarship supports students who are interested in careers in human resources or labor relations.

“Anything that we can do to help students accomplish their goals and fulfill their dreams is really important,” says Jean, LA'83, GR'88.

The Paul family has continued to support the scholarship with additional contributions, including memorial contributions for Jean’s brother, Thomas, and their mom, Barbara, who both died recently. Jean, who is a two-time Drake graduate, also has created a bequest through her will to support the scholarship in the future.

“I knew I wanted our family to be remembered as an integral part of Drake,” says Jean. “Planned giving enables you to do that.”
